Garlic!
Today is National Garlic Day!
Garlic has a compound called allicin, responsible for many health benefits: it makes garlic antiviral, anthelmintic, antifungal, and antibacterial. It can help treat and prevent oral, respiratory, and gastric infections and aid wound healing.
Garlic also lowers blood pressure, so I have recommended garlic in capsules to patients who experienced high blood pressure even on medication.*
These are just a few of garlic’s many benefits.
When cooking with fresh garlic, add it to the end of food preparation because high heat could limit or eliminate allicin’s healing and health benefits. It’s best to consume garlic fresh and raw to benefit from its healing and antimicrobial properties.
While garlic powder doesn’t have the same benefits as fresh garlic, it is a good option for seasoning foods if you’re looking for condiments without salt.
*When I recommended garlic in capsules for lower blood pressure, I knew the patients’ medical history. Please consult with a healthcare professional to know whether a garlic supplement suits your case.
I hope you liked these facts about garlic.
Write me if you have any favorite recipes with garlic or if you’d like to add anything to this list of health benefits provided by this delicious vegetable, herb, and seasoning.
