More Herbs, Less Salt Day
Let's talk about salt since today it's more herbs, less salt day.
Salt is the combination of sodium and chloride. Sodium makes blood pressure increase by constricting the blood vessels.
The kidneys control blood pressure, and when there's too much sodium for the kidneys to filter, more sodium is collected in the blood, constricting the blood vessels causing high blood pressure, and strain on the cardiovascular system. This strain can cause stroke, heart attack, and heart failure, among other issues. It could also make a person more prone to developing kidney stones.
Check food packages for sodium content. Some people think 150 milligrams of sodium might be too much sodium content, but if other meals and snacks are also being monitored for sodium, this isn't too much sodium for a meal or snack. On the other hand, if you see a food or snack with more than 1,000 milligrams of sodium per portion, or if you're eating a larger portion than the serving size recommended on the package, you could be consuming a large amount of sodium per day!
