Tips For Healthier Versions of Hamburgers
It's National Hamburger Month.
I have a tip if you do eat meat and a tip if you're trying to eat a more plant-based diet. You can enjoy hamburgers either way.
If you enjoy eating meat, I recommend trying bison meat for hamburgers. Bison meat is leaner, giving you more protein and less fat. It's also more sustainable since the bovine meat industry doesn't apply techniques and practices to help the environment. Choose grass-fed bison meat for your hamburger.
If you want to enjoy hamburgers but would like to follow a more plant-based diet, enjoy soy, bean, chickpea, quinoa, or lentil hamburgers. Plant-based diets are less likely to cause cardiovascular issues in the long term, and they can be delicious.
With either meat or vegetarian hamburger options, you can make it healthier by adding fresh tomatoes, lettuce, arugula, spinach (or mixed greens), fresh cucumbers instead of pickles, and pick organic and/or sugar-free ketchup. These ingredients will help you reduce the salt, sugar, and calories in traditional burgers.
To save calories: have your hamburger without the bread. Add more vegetables to your plate with your hamburger to feel more satiety with fewer calories.
I hope you enjoy the start of grilling season with the tips I provided!
